Why a revision can make sense

Obesity surgery is an important step – but not always the last one. In the clinic, we analyse the causes of your symptoms in a targeted way and develop an individual solution: an endoscopic procedure or a corrective operation.

Obesity is a chronic disease that often needs long-term, multi-stage therapy. Complications or insufficient weight loss after obesity surgery are not uncommon and not a personal failure. Sometimes the first path does not lead straight to the goal, sometimes new circumstances in life put what has been achieved at risk, and sometimes symptoms arise that can be treated well today.

Even a well-performed operation works only as well as aftercare and everyday life allow. It is not always down to behaviour, however – there are often medical reasons. Insufficient weight loss or renewed weight gain usually has one of these causes:

What does a revision cost – and what does the German health insurer pay?

Weight Doctors® REVISION is available to self-paying patients from €900; the price depends on the procedure. A revision is also possible as a service covered by German statutory health insurance, however – with a medical indication in line with the guidelines, there is a chance of cost coverage by the health insurer. Whether you are a statutory-insured patient, a private patient or self-paying: everyone receives the same consultation.

What is a revision after stomach surgery?

A revision is a repeat bariatric procedure – for people who have regained weight after an earlier stomach operation, have not lost enough weight or suffer from symptoms. Depending on the cause, it is carried out surgically or endoscopically, from converting a gastric sleeve into a bypass to follow-up correction from the inside.

Did I do something wrong?

No. Obesity is a chronic disease with many influencing factors. Complications or insufficient weight loss after obesity surgery (technically: bariatric surgery) are not a sign of personal failure but require targeted further medical treatment.

I was operated on at another clinic. Can I still come?

Yes. Our revision clinic is open to everyone – regardless of where the original procedure took place, even if it was abroad. Why specialist follow-up care is particularly important in that case, you can read in the article Stomach reduction abroad.

Which procedures come into question for a revision?

Surgically, for example a re-sleeve, conversion to a bypass procedure, a bypass revision or restoring the restriction; endoscopically, making the pouch or anastomosis smaller and other minimally invasive revision techniques. Where does the treatment take place?

Surgical revisions take place at the Weight Doctors® Nationalklinik in Wertheim, our centre for obesity surgery. The initial consultation is possible in person on site, by telephone or by video consultation.

How quickly can I get an appointment?

Is a revision dangerous?

Every procedure is assessed individually and planned carefully. Our team at the Weight Doctors® Nationalklinik in Wertheim relies on modern procedures to keep the risks as low as possible. We discuss all the details with you in a personal conversation.

What does a revision cost?

Weight Doctors® REVISION is available to self-paying patients from €900; the price depends on the procedure. You can find all prices in the overview of services.

Does the German health insurer cover the costs of a revision?

If the requirements are met, yes: with a medical indication in line with the guidelines, there is a chance of cost coverage by the German health insurer. We advise you individually on your options.

Do I have to submit an application to the German health insurer myself?

No. There is no prior application, and you have no paperwork. Before the procedure, we check all the requirements for you; you do not have to speak to your German health insurer. More under Stomach reduction and health insurance.

Do I need an MMK again before a revision?

For cost coverage by German statutory health insurance, a multimodal programme (MMK) is usually required – a 6-month preparation programme. It is a prerequisite but is not itself covered by the insurer. We organise all the appointments for you.

Can I pay for a revision in instalments?

Yes. Part payment is possible through our partner medipay, and you determine the term yourself. More under Paying in instalments.

What happens after the revision?
