What does weight-loss surgery cost – and what does German health insurance pay?
Weight Doctors BARIATRICS® is also available through German statutory health insurance if the medical indication is established in line with the guidelines. Without health insurance, the treatment is available to self-paying patients. Prices start at €2,900.
Where the medical indication meets the guidelines, there is a chance of cost coverage by German health insurance: with a BMI ≥ 40 or a BMI ≥ 35 with recognised related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnoea. Without medical necessity, health insurance does not as a rule cover the costs.
A prerequisite is then a 6-month multimodal programme (MMK) with nutritional consultation (5 sessions), an exercise log, a psychological assessment, gastroscopy and a full blood count; the MMK itself is not a German health insurance benefit. With a primary indication (BMI ≥ 50 or BMI ≥ 35 with type 2 diabetes for which other treatment options have been exhausted), immediate surgery is possible. Further prerequisites: at least 18 years of age, no existing or imminently planned pregnancy and psychological stability.
There is no prior application: we organise the MMK and surgery appointments, before the operation we check all the prerequisites for you, and billing takes place directly after the operation. You do not have to speak to your German health insurer. This is how the costs are divided:
