A common widespread disease

In industrialised countries, metabolic syndrome is one of the most common widespread diseases: one in five Germans has it, and among 46- to 65-year-olds even one in four – and the trend is rising. Because it can lead to serious secondary illnesses, you should have a doctor check whether the following criteria apply to you.

How doctors recognise metabolic syndrome

Doctors speak of metabolic syndrome when abdominal excess weight is present and, in addition, at least two of the four metabolic disorders in the table apply.

Abdominal excess weight (prerequisite): waist circumferencemore than 88 cmmore than 102 cm

Why a medical assessment makes sense

If you have abdominal excess weight, you should have your blood values checked by a doctor. This is because metabolic syndrome runs for a long time without symptoms, or with only quite non-specific complaints such as tiredness, increased sweating or a constant feeling of hunger.

Many of those affected see a doctor only when the first secondary illnesses make themselves felt, such as cardiac arrhythmia, attacks of angina pectoris (tightness in the chest), breathlessness or ringing in the ears. A medical assessment makes sense before the first complaints appear. Weight reduction can help to prevent the health consequences of metabolic syndrome in good time.

Losing weight despite an increased feeling of hunger

Endoscopic procedures such as Weight Doctors SLEEVE® or the gastric balloon can help you lose weight despite the increased feeling of hunger in metabolic syndrome – without medication and without conventional surgery. Which path may come into question for you, we clarify in the consultation.
